Helix LL.M. –

Support for Your LL.M. Program and Beyond

By: Allie Robbins, Managing Director, Academic Programs and Partnerships, Helix Bar Review®

Pursuing an LL.M. degree in the United States often involves more than learning new concepts. Many international students must also adapt to a new legal system, different classroom expectations, Legal English, unfamiliar study methods, and new exam formats. And, it’s exactly these challenges that are the root cause of low U.S. bar passage rates for foreign-trained attorneys. Because no comprehensive bar review program, alone, will make up for a lack of understanding of the fundamental expectations of U.S. legal writing, high-stakes testing, and the underpinnings of legal doctrine.

Helix LL.M. is designed to help you navigate all these new challenges and prepare you for the bar exam. The one-of-a-kind self-paced program is broken into two pathways — one to help with success in your LL.M. program, and one to give early exposure to the doctrine and skills tested on the bar exam. Helix LL.M. comes bundled together with a Helix comprehensive bar review course, allowing you to transition into focused bar preparation once you have built a solid foundation of the skills and knowledge that will help you to get the most out of bar review.

Pathway One: Foundation of U.S. Legal Study

The first pathway in Helix LL.M. is divided into three modules.

Module One: Understanding the U.S. Legal System

The first module provides you with an introduction to the U.S. Legal System. Topics include:

  • Federalism
  • The U.S. judicial system
  • Separation of powers
  • The civil system
  • The criminal system
  • Statutory interpretation

These lessons provide the basic foundation you need to understand how government functions in the United States and supply you with context for your law school classes.

Module Two: Learning in a U.S. Law School

U.S. law schools often use teaching methods that differ from those used in other countries. The second module focuses on the skills and strategies needed to succeed in that environment.

Lessons include:

  • Socratic method
  • Class preparation
  • Effective study techniques
  • Time management
  • Rule synthesis and outlining

By understanding what professors expect and how legal learning typically occurs in U.S. classrooms, you can approach your studies with greater confidence and efficiency.

Module Three: Developing Legal English Skills

Success in an LL.M. program often depends on the ability to read, write, speak, and analyze legal materials in English. The third module consists of 20 Legal English units that provide instruction and practice in areas, such as: speaking, reading, pronunciation, writing, grammar, and more.

Pathway Two: Beginning Bar Skills

The second pathway gives you early exposure to the skills, doctrine, and practice that you will need to succeed on the bar exam. You will learn the core doctrine tested, as well as how to strategically approach each type of bar exam question. The Beginning Bar Skills pathway will help you to acclimate to how to study for the bar utilizing outlines, videos, and practice questions. This early exposure allows you to become familiar with bar-style learning and assessment before beginning dedicated bar preparation.

Flexibility for Different Timelines

Not every LL.M. student takes the bar exam immediately after graduation. Some students choose to sit for a later February or July administration; others may spend additional time gaining professional experience before beginning full bar study.

Because Helix LL.M. is self-paced, students can move through the material according to their own schedules. The program can be used throughout an LL.M. program as an academic and bar preparation resource, with access to a full Helix Bar Review course available when formal bar study begins.

Preparing for Success Early

Helix LL.M. combines instruction on the U.S. legal system, academic success strategies, Legal English, and bar-tested doctrine in a single program. By introducing these concepts early, it helps you build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for both LL.M. coursework and future bar exam preparation.
