Five Ways to Navigate Bar Prep While Life is Still Happening

By: Victoria N. Burnette, Esq., Regional Director, Helix Bar Review

Preparing for the bar exam – whether it’s your first time or you’re a retaker – requires time, focus, and sustained effort. In an ideal world, everything else would pause so you could focus solely on studying. But for many bar takers, life doesn’t conveniently slow down. Work responsibilities, family obligations, financial pressures, and personal commitments continue right up to exam day.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Balancing real life demands with bar prep is challenging, and it does not mean you’re doing anything wrong. The key is learning to study strategically and sustainably – without putting your life completely on hold. If you’re preparing for the bar while juggling other responsibilities, these five strategies can help you stay focused, consistent, and on track.

1. Be honest about your capacity.

One of the most common bar prep mistakes is building a study plan around an ideal version of your life instead of your actual circumstances. If you work full-time, have caregiving responsibilities, or manage multiple commitments, a rigid, high hour daily schedule may seem necessary, but often isn’t sustainable. Take an honest look at how many focused hours you can realistically commit to each day. Consistent, high-quality study time matters far more than total hours logged.

Be honest with yourself and others about your capacity and requirements. While family and friends know that this is the last step on your path to becoming a licensed attorney, they may not fully understand the demands of preparing for the bar exam. Set expectations and explain the time and focus required to pass the bar exam. 2. Schedule your life first, then your study time.

Instead of trying to fit life around bar prep, flip the approach. Block out your non-negotiables first: work hours, family commitments, rest, and anything essential for your well-being. Then build your study plan around those constants. This creates a schedule grounded in reality, reduces guilt, and helps you stay consistent. (Note: Helix Bar Review’s comprehensive courses offer 10-, 12-, 16-, and 20-week study schedule options to fit your timetable and learning style.) You can find more information on creating a Study Plan that is tailored for you, along with sample study plans, in this Ask EDNA! lesson.

3. Study smarter, not longer.

When time is limited, efficiency becomes your best ally. Prioritize active learning. Practice multiple-choice questions, write essays, review model answers, and focus on high-yield rules. Spend time effectively assessing your performance on your practice of each of the components on the bar exam, so that you understand why you got answers right or wrong. Replace long to-do lists with clear daily priorities. Completing two or three high-impact tasks each day will propel you forward more effectively than trying to do everything at once. (Check out these Ask EDNA! lessons for more study tools to maximize your time.)

4. Protect your energy and your mindset.

Balancing bar prep with other responsibilities can be draining, and burnout is a real concern. Build in breaks, prioritize sleep, and give yourself permission to relax without guilt. Rest isn’t optional. It’s a key component of effective studying and managing stress.

5. Give yourself grace and stay consistent.

Preparing for the bar takes resilience and flexibility. Some days simply won’t go as planned – and that’s normal. What matters most is the ability to reevaluate, reset, and keep moving forward. Progress, not perfection, is what carries you across the finish line. Passing the bar is about consistently showing up.

Bar prep is demanding – but it’s also temporary. With the right strategies, a workable schedule, and flexibility when life happens, you can move through the process with confidence.
